  1. Take my kids to the Barnes & Noble, we all get coffees/mochas, pick out a book to read, go home, finish Ch1, make popcorn, watch a movie, Sunday morning, repeat.

  2. I am all about mini-vacations. The GF and I like to spend weekends in Vegas, San Luis Obispo, Palm Desert, or sometimes will go to Morongo just to eat at In-n-Out, shop at the outlets and perhaps spend a few bucks gambling. We have a big trip coming up in January to the Dominican Republic. Super excited.

I also play basketball a few times a week in a men's league, golf whenever I get the chance, and play in a few fantasy sports leagues. All of these keep my mind away from work and keep me sane.

  3. I try to spend some times outdoors regularly. I live close to the beach, so I will either ride my bike or walk the beach. I also try to make sure that I spend time with friends outside of work and try not to alienate myself. Sometimes, instead of working at home on the weekends, I will come in super early on a Monday morning and prepare for the week.

I try to read nightly, and not watch too much TV. Journaling is a big part of my daily routine as well.

  4. Sadly, I can't balance my work and personal life. My life is my work. However, it is getting a little better with the new curriculum. The fact that I don't have to create a lesson plan from scratch is a burden off my shoulder and as I get more and more familiar with StudySync and get students into it, maybe I'll have more time with my family.

  5. During my free time I like to watch movies, take trips, spend time with people I care about, exercise and just veg out. All of the above helps me to unwind and relax. Its amazing how clear solutions to challenges come when you take your mind off the challenges for while.

  6. If it's something that can wait, it doesn't go home with me, my work laptop doesn't go home, and all we talk about is things that need to get done around house, where to take the kids, and watching movies. Most importantly whatever the kids decide park, grandmas etc. plus mini vacations.

  8. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Researching new ways to make coffee and new beans to try from different geographical locations.
How does this help you to recharge and rethink a problem or practice? This helps me learn to be culturally relevant in my teaching to make the topics we learn more relate to what students interests are.
What do you like to do on your vacations? I enjoy going camping.
The weekends? Mostly I spend my weekends trying to sleep in and complete errands.

  9. If I don't have grading to do or lesson planning, I love vegging out in front of my tv with a favorite snack. I like to watch movies to get my mind off of work. I love taking trips with my husband. We are planning on going to Houston next month and we want to go to Italy this summer.

  10. Recently I have gotten into yoga/pilates and salsa class. I try to go to a yoga/pilates class at least three times a week and I go to a salsa class one day a week. At night before going to sleep, I do some recreational reading as well. On the weekends, I like to spend time with my family. Basically, this year, I try to keep all my work at school so that when I'm out of school, I can try to take my mind off my work stresses.

  11. My time outside of work involves hanging out with my friends and specially my family. My family hangouts is usually including my dog, sister, mom, and dad. We work around the house, cook, and just spending quality time. When possible with my friends we go on mini trips. Since I don't have children I do not mind taking work home, for example: Counting coins at Coinstar for Pennies for Patients, calling advisory parents, running with SRLA, tutoring family members.

  12. Decompression activities such as movies/television, sports, music, exercise, spending time with friends, outdoors/nature, and the like.
Along with decompression activities, time spent on reflection is a major component to recharging and progressing as a teacher.

  14. Now that wedding-planning is done, I like to spend my time going to exercise class, write poetry, clean the house, try Omakase at different sushi restaurants with my best friend, learn about finances/retirement/stocks, spoil my cat "Thomas Catfield," and my guilty pleasure is watching reality TV.

  16. My secret is travel, hiking, bicycle riding and politicking for fun. In addition I enjoy time with family & friends. I understood that work with students an families is a privilege and our work is never done and know that I need to recharge to keep getting my work done. I choose my battles, complete tasks that at times I may not agree with the rationale. I understand that there will always be individuals with passive aggressive behaviors and I learn to manage them. I can only honor and celebrate those who are on board-they are the resilient educators and future school leaders in schools who accept change and not ruled my the notion to "control" little things. These were lessons I revisit and reflect on when I travel and it brings me clarity, peace of mind and increases my productivity. Eleanor Roosevelt said Small People talk about other people. Average people talk about things. GREAT PEOPLE talk about ideas!

  17. Balance is the key. I am never perfectly balanced but I am always swinging around trying to get there. I love my Saturday early morning cycling rides up Angeles Crest alone or with biking friends who push me and are much better than I but I am grateful they let me tag along. My wife is my better half and is someone that brings out the best in me...so, that definitely helps to bring me back to a sweeter reality. My son and I share night time runs and reading books. He is just someone that always relaxes me and makes me laugh. He is the joker of the family. My daughter has a smile that makes me forget everything when I come home. No matter the struggles or challenges I face, when she shows me her little 2 year old smile...I am fully in her moment.

  18. My secret weapon is to keep my vow to myself to always stay active, eat a balanced healthy diet, and try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. I've been teaching Group Fitness classes at the gym for 20+ years since my first year in college. I truly believe our bodies are meant to be active so when someone tells me he/she is too tired to work out... I tell them, "you're tired because you're NOT working out!" Currently, I teach 3 classes a week (Power Yoga, Spin, and BodyShred). No matter what my day was like, as soon as the music comes on in my classes, I'm totally transported to the Land of No Worries! On Sundays, I go trail running in the Burbank Hills (Stough Canyon/Vital Link/Wildwood Canyon) with my husband at 7am even though I'd much prefer to sleep in. If the weather's great like it has been, my favorite girl (my only niece), comes over to swim or we go to the beach. Honestly, 2 hours of playing with a 3-year-old is way harder than any work-out! LOL!
