What is your best Middle School Memory? What is something that was a challenge for you in Middle School?

  1. Not sure about the best, but some of my fondest memories of middle school came from the early morning basketball games out on the yard. Games started at 7am, with the best, and most competitive hoops players from Palms Middle School competing to have bragging rights for the day. I remember learning to fine tune my skills, talk a little trash, and compete against players far better than me. And being the only white person on the court helped build tons of resiliency, as that trend continued all the way through high school.

One challenge for me was making good friends. I always had a group of friends, but not good friends. I bounced around from different groups- basketball in the morning, the "cool" quad group during lunch, and then I hung out in the computer lab after school. Plus my Mom worked at the school so some kids kept their distance from me because they didn't like my Mom. lol.

  2. Both my favorite memory and my challenge had to do with sports. My favorite memory occurred during one of my basketball games. I could not miss a shot, and the crowd was going crazy. I also met one of my closet friends through both football and basketball.

My most challenging time was when I ran the anchor leg on the 4 man 800 relay. We had the lead when I received the baton, but I stumbled off the track and was caught at the end. My little middle school heart was broken!

  3. My most prominent memory from middle school is a teacher I used to work with. Her name was Ms. Courtney and I just remember that she really treated me like a young adult and not a child. I have a hard time remembering any specific memories, I just remember the person. I think that speaks to the nature of middle school, it is such a major time developmentally, that you remember the feelings and people more than specific memories.

I remember as a middle school student I hated being so tall! Anything that makes you 'different' than your peers is uncomfortable. Luckily, I was a pretty competitive swimmer and my height was celebrated outside of school!

  4. Middle school was hard for me. My best memory was probably the crush I had from 7th grade to 12th grade :) There were also grade level teams that consisntely met to talk about their shared kids- this level of communication was obvious and it made a huge impact of us- we knew they were communicating with each other and it kep us in check. It also made us feel like they cared for us.

My challenge was making sense of my identity and not having access to tools to help me with my identity crisis. I wasn't a good reader and I also didn't have books to help me.

  5. It's difficult to think of a best middle school memory. Usually when middle school experience is discussed, there is such a focus on how difficult of a stage it is.
One memory I do appreciate is being in band. It helped me find a community in middle school.
A challenge was genuine friends. I find that middle school is a stage where everyone experiments with bullying, making it difficult to make positive relationships.

  8. My best middle school memory was performing for the first time during our winter concert along with the Virgil Choir and Orchestra. Still the best middle school concert I have seen! I knew then and there what was my calling.

The biggest challenge I had in middle school was acne! I didn't suffer from a lot but when I did, it was noticeable. Too noticeable. I was very self-conscious.

  9. My best middle school memory was the friends I made and the chance to go to Space Camp. It was really fun to be away from home and try new things. A challenge was reading and writing. Being a second language learner, I had a hard time with grammar and writing conventions.

  10. My best middle school memory was my science classes and laboratories, outdoor education and our week at camp. In addition I served as Public Relations Chairperson in MS to promote school student body events and sporting events. Enjoyed playing baseball and competed in Major League and Pony baseball leagues. I also remember my job of babysitting my two younger siblings who I was responsible to pick up after school, get home and get HW done before mom arrived home.

  11. The best middle school memory was when I went to Outdoor Science Camp. I loved that I was away from my parents, spending time with friends, and learning about cool science concepts.

A challenge that I faced in middle school was not knowing who I was and where I fit in. It was an awkward time in my life where I felt insecure and tried hard to fit in.

  12. Math class was a great experience. Being able to revisit that subject everyday really built on my progress in that class. Being challenged on problems that were at times of a higher level was an experience I still hold valuable.

  13. One of my best middle school memories is the connections I made with my teachers. This connection came with the realization that they were not only educators, but also "real" people that I could go to for advice, support, and encouragement.
A challenge I had in middle school was geometry class. I struggled mightily, and had to go to tutoring.

  14. One of my favorite middle school memories has to be training and completing the LA Marathon with SRLA. SRLA taught me about hard-work and dedication it was a great learning experience. SRLA offered stability in my life.

  15. My best memory middle school moment was when my husband and I was running the leadership team at Virgil Middle School. The leadership team had to be dressed in suit and tie for boys and skirts and blouses for girls once a week. We arranged all the school events, graduations, and much more. The fact that the students had to dress up made a huge change in their social skills and behavior.

My challenge was when I first started teaching at Virgil Middle School, they gave me the worst Special Ed class where students actually were hanging from the ceiling. They did it on purpose to see how long I would last. Well, I outlastet most teachers and Principals till I heard about YOKA when it opened and decided to try a new avenue.

    Heaven = 6th grade girls ........ Challenges= 8th grade boys

  17. I don’t think I have one particular best memory, but I have a few. I really enjoyed working in the Student Store, Service Class for the Health Office, and building relationships with friends.

A challenge that I had in 6th grade is that I was extremely quiet in class during 6th grade, mostly because I had no connections to people yet.

  18. Every 6th grader in my district went to 'science camp' for one week. My entire class, teacher, other 6th grade classes, and other schools went to camp. Sang songs, learned about nature, camp fires, hikes, trails, great community time.
It was a challenge in middle school managing my time with school life and E.C. activities.

  19. My best memory in MS was AVID and competing during lunch on different sports with our guy friends (Girl vs Boys)

Something challenging was feeling "different" even though there were Latino students in my school there weren't many who came from immigrant parents. I was darker and shorter compared to other Latinos and many teachers attribute my writing errors to knowing Spanish, even though I didn't know how to speak Spanish well.

  20. Tripodes

Although I can’t think back to a specific moment I do have fond memories of my 7th grade science teacher. We had class in a bungalow, which were always the most inhospitable of rooms, they were either too hot or too cold and spelled of carcinogens. But my teacher Ms. Williams decorated the classroom with habitat recreations in the corners of the class. She created a space that felt beautiful and comfortable in one that was originally quite opposite. In many ways that class was a challenge but she was able to create the kind of learning environment where I was able to learn and enjoy learning in the process.

  21. My best memory in MS was being with my best friend. We were inseparable. We played all day and spent the night at each others houses for weeks telling stories swapping familes, and food. We lived each day like it was our last. I don't remember wearing a shirt or shoes during most of the summer in Kansas. We were pretty inseparable and always thought of fun things to keep us occupied. We made plays, haunted houses, played baseball, football, and laughed at how bad we were at the latter. We were constantly yelled at in football practice because we didn't hit hard enough, laughed too much, and were way too small to make any real impact on the team.

Worse memory is when my best friend had to move. We both cried really hard and realized our friendship would never be the same. When he left, I was very lonely at school and took some time to find new friends.

  22. My best memories of middle school are the friendships that I made. I am happy to say that some of those girls are my best friends today.
