YOKA School Culture and Class Culture

What IS working overall in my class?  What do I need to WORK ON to improve? What could we do more of at YOKA to support our students even better?

  1. What is working is the positive classroom environment that has been established. I see students willingly helping each other, asking more questions and understanding the consequences if they are given.
What I need to work on is how to hold more students accountable.
Last Friday during the 8th grade activity I saw most students on their phones with earphones, and two students that changed out of uniform, so I was concerned on how we are consistent with school rules and understanding with ones should we be enforcing.

    1. YES!!!!
I have noticed that students are allowed to wear college sweaters in the building. There are mixed messages and it would be nice to have the CONSISTENT EXPECTATIONS listed in the hallways and enforced.

  2. What IS working well in the library is having lots of activities and promoting them heavily. What I need to improve on is having more conversations with kids about books. Even though I feel so busy all the time, it's important slow down and make these connections with students and literacy. To support our students even better, I need to provide more AR updates in different forms for students and staff. With that said, I JUST updated the AR bulletin board with new data :)

  3. Behavior has decreased tremendously in one of my classes, Mr. Greene and I have developed individual behavior charts. From positive phone calls to last 20 minutes of class for preferred class activity . We have targeted individuals for positive reinforcement everyday. We are not given them a chance to be negative towards themselves or for work

  4. What is working is keeping the students in short activities. I started playing the instrumental version of the Beatles and that soothes the environment. Even the hyperactive ones settle down when they are working. Coding is my go to now. They are so good when they are coding. What I need to work on is having alternative work for the students who have given up. YOKA would be better if there were individual consequences. Having the parents sit in with the constant disruptive students. Having the students with chronic misbehavior be given consequences, immediately.

  5. What is working overall in my class is the routines and expectations I have set in place. Students know how to set up their labs, write their notes, update their table of contents, etc. Students also know how they are graded - they know how their notebooks are evaluated and how they can make fixes to bring up their grade, quizzes, and rubrics on projects. In a lot of my classes, there is also a positive learning environment where students ask questions and take risks in volunteering their responses. What I need to work on is establishing more positive relationships with students who I have a difficult time with. I also need to work on being consistent in enforcing the rules.

  6. Having a positive classroom environment has been very successful for me. The students are not allowed to ridicule each other. Students feel they can speak up in class and answer a question, knowing they can make a mistake without been ridiculed.

  7. The most successful aspect of my curriculum this year has been my common practices. By instilling common practices daily, such as warm-ups, think-pair-share, and exit tickets I feel my students have come to see these exercises as routines to there school day.

One thing I think I need to improve on is how to handle behavior issues with my all girls classes. Sometimes I really struggle on how to address disrespectful and emotional outbursts of my girls. I have noticed they are exceptionally emotional and highly concerned with their social circles and that a lot of the time interferes with the curricular objectives at hand. Figuring out how to juggle different situations with my girls would be very helpful.

  8. The KAGAN strategies and how students communicate and work together in their respective groups seems to be going well. Students openly and honestly discuss topics utilizing academic language. Also the "Do-Nows"are a real point of focus for students, and allows them to write each day, read and think critically, and again communicate with their fellow classmates. I need to work on developing my in-class library with engaging A.R books, to help facilitate the success of all of my students regarding their A.R reading. As a school, the more we do things the same in our respective classrooms, i.e. annotations, SOAR, etc., the more reinforcement it will bring to students of certain skills, concepts, etc.

  9. The students have been engaged with disciplinary issues down to a minimum. I sometimes push the boundaries of what might be considered challenging too far for some students to fully comprehend the necessary information. So, my next steps are to structure my lessons in such a way that makes these difficult concepts more attainable for the students that tend to consistently struggle.

  10. Most of my students understand the class routines and expectations. Most of my students also understand different Kagan activities used during their classwork. What we've been working on for 6th math is keeping up with math learning log reflection. We are still working on it to use academic words in their log, but there has been a big improvement.
