  2. I think flexibility is the greatest quality an educator needs to possess. I feel a teacher is always learning and growing and should be quick to adjust and be flexible to meet students needs.

  3. Attention to detail; the small stuff really adds up and makes a big difference.

  4. As a special education teacher I think the greatest quality is patience. It is important to take our time when teaching content that students struggle with. We need patience to give interventions time to really work. We need patience to really get to know our students and provide the appropriate strategies for our students.

    2. I tell this to kids all the time. When they ask me what they should do with their lives...I tell them find their passion...that thing they love doing and make it their job. To me that is the secret to success.

  6. Liking the kids you work with/being with the right age group. My first year teaching I taught First grade and almost quit. After a few years of jumping around to different grades I realized Middle School was where I wanted to be.

  7. I think compassion is essential to an educator. Compassion for the communities you serve, the students that you work with, and the outside factors that may dictate a student's in-school behavior. Without compassion, I think that burnout turns up faster and more pronounced.

  8. I think patience, and understanding goes a long way. We/they need to see that they are children, they are learning and you are willing work with them. They need to see that there are limits, and crossing them brings on consequences. Mutual respect, and the ability to laugh at your mistakes, and accept mistakes goes a long ways.

  9. This is an impossible question to answer for me. Teaching is the only job on the planet where you assume the roles of so many other professions. We teach of course, but we also are sometimes the parent, nurse, counselor, mentor, coach, listener, role model etc. I think maybe the greatest quality of an educator is to understand that we must change our role from teacher to any of the previously mentioned.

  10. The educator needs to be knowledgeable about the subjects he/she teaches and needs to keep up with new advances. The educator should have a variety of teaching methods, which match the ways different students learn and care for his/her students.

  11. I agree with Mr. Morrison that it is very difficult to name one quality. To be a teacher requires - patience, love, compromise, compassion, attention to detail...just to name a few. Every day calls for different situations and as a teacher, we need to be able to be there in all the different ways our students need us.

    1. Educators wear so many hats. I agree that many qualities are necessary. Flexibility, a passion for learning, content knowledge, communication, organization, empathy, care...and so much more

  12. An educator needs to be flexible since there are so many things that are out of our control. For example, based on student data, educators need to modify their lessons or add accommodations to their lessons.

  13. It's hard to pick one, I think a passion for the content you teach and passion for the youth we teach.
We need to make sure we connect the two. One thing is knowing the content, it's completely different planning lessons that engage and support the students we teach it too, but passion for them to learn should drive our planning.

  14. I agree with everyone here that educators do wear many hats. I believe the best trait to possess is a Work-Life Balance. Sometimes, (especially when you're new or taking on a new role) we dive right in and may neglect some of the other important aspects in our lives in order to do a meticulous job at work. A great mentor once pulled me aside and said life is about juggling 5 glass balls... WORK, HEALTH, FAMILY, FRIENDS, and INTEGRITY... all of them are crucial so we must learn to find a way to juggle all 5 without dropping one in order to acquire balance and thus, be an effective educator. Not an easy task by any means. I have to work on this everyday.

    1. It is always a good reminder that we are in a profession that demands much. We need to allow ourselves time to recharge as well. We need to replenish our lives continually as well. We too need to model healthy relationships and live full and rich lives on the outside as well.
