What is your progress on "It's On Us to Change" Awareness month? What are some struggles or successes that you have had around this campaign?

  1. Since PE classes are getting settled, having assemblies, GEAR UP surveys, textbooks, and getting PE lockers, I've been focusing on Advisory for this campaign. We've had circle talks about 2nd Step Lesson 2 which reminds them all about what it was like to be a 6th grader and focuses on Empathy and being an Ally. We just had talks about some of the things 6th grade girls might have to deal with like bullying, not having any friends, not knowing how to open lockers, worrying about dressing in the locker room etc. etc. We ended up adopting Mr. Valenzuela's 6th grade girls class and they've had one group activity in the dance room and helped them open lockers yesterday. Their homework was to find their "little sister" this week and ask how her week is going.

    2. Being an ally is really important with regards to bullying, so students know what they should do if someone is being bullied.

  2. We have been looking at the concept of bullying. I have had the students write about the topics in their journals during our DO NOW activity. We have have had pair/share discussions about the students personal experiences of bullying, and have had classroom discussions as well. We have seen videos on our responsibility if we notice someone being bullied. We also have created ant-bullying posters.

    1. I like the sharing of personal experiences and how to deal with situations. I think it's important to show students what to do when they witness such acts, and for them to know that you are there to help them figure things out.

  3. We have discussed bullying, harassment, and their consequences. I have allowed students to freely share experiences, and have spoken about why it's wrong, and also, steps to take to make a change. In advisory, we have started talking about second step, the topics to come, and the seriousness of the conversations. Students understand that the information disclosed is serious, and that no one is to make anyone feel bad, or belittled.

  4. We are just starting with having our students learn about their learning styles

  5. It has been great to support different subjects because I am able to see different departments, their approach and their progress. I love the videos that Ms. Cardenas has been using to teach the older boys the repercussions of bullying and the posters that Mr. Thomas is having the LTEL students make. Ms. Judilla has been using Growth Mindset as a way to better inform students of their strengths and how to better use their strengths to develop areas of need and support one another.

  6. I spent two weeks discussing rules, routines and procedures and from that I have covered the many aspects of bullying. I made it very clear that bullying would not be tolerated in any form in the classroom or wherever we are as a class. For Second Step, Ms. Wester was kind of enough to have her 8th grade girls be big sisters to my 6th grade girls class. Thank you Ms. Wester!

  7. In the Math Department, we have written down questions we are going to give a survey our 6, 7, and 8th graders.

In departments today, we will decide what day to give the surveys.

  8. I haven't fully started work on the Awareness Month Campaign with my Science classes. I anticipate to get solidly into it in two weeks as I plan to tie the concept of Sexual Harassment during the Comprehensive Sexual Health unit.

  9. In science we are developing lessons that link concepts in science to the socially relevant issues of the day.

  10. I will be starting this week. In one class I did a growth vs fixed mindset activity today. In all classes I will be doing the assessment for students to find out what learning style they are. Ferrel and I decided to do this after an opening activity that asks students what helps them learn, like a chalk talk or concept map. We will then have them group up based on their learning styles on the following class and do a mock lesson of what a certain content would be taught to appeal to their specific learning style.
We'll follow this up by doing a project that focuses on learning disabilities where students present the information they found on the posters for the awareness campaign.

  11. So far this year, our class how discussed proper ways to communicate with one another and what it means to actively "participate" in a positive way both inside and outside the classroom.

  12. i love that fact that all classes are engaged in the same subject and are engaged in multi-modal approach to learning it!!!!!!

  13. This year I deliberately delayed playing in the advance classes to help promote more of a unified group. I noticed that in previous years we had a built a tight sense of community and belonging within sections but not as an entire class. This year I feel like we are better together.

The one challenge is that it has slowed us in our musicianship. But we are gaining ground.

For my beginners we are still seating in a large circle. This has minimize the distractions, keeping them honest with themselves and each other. This is a change from the last years when it was straight to business and sitting in rows.

  14. In my English classes, we discussed bullying and looked at conflict scenarios. We paid special attention to the importance of developing empathy. In my Spanish classes, we're looking at our rich cultural diversity and students are working on a project that acknowledges every Spanish speaking country.

  15. The students discussed their personal experiences with bullying. The students also discussed what bullying looks like and how what one student may consider bullying another student may not. We have also seen videos on bullying

  16. We have been discussing the positive results of being a friend versus a bully. Students are challenged to be a part of the solution, not a bystander, and to create an environment of peace and productivity.

  17. We have discussed the different types of bullying in class. Strategies for copping with situations they may go through

  18. We've addressed in the classroom: how to be respectful and how to maintain healthy relationships. For example, we discussed possible conflicts that may arise in friend groups and how students would respond. A struggle was helping students not react hastily and on their raw emotions. Whereas a success has been the open safe space dialogue students seem to feel comfortable discussing these topics. Another success has been incorporating the math content into conversations about isolation and bullying.

  20. I am still in the planning stages of this “It’s On Us to Change” Awareness month. With students we have started talking about respecting those around us, treating others as we would like to be treated, and the effects of bullying. But I hope to further explore this topic in the days to come. I also hope to make sure that after meeting with the Math Department, we have our plans finalized.

  21. As a class we went over the Dragon Pact in all periods. Mr. Gutierrez spoke of respecting each others discussion comments, answers, and work. We emphasized that our classroom is a SAFE SPACE for all. In advisory we have gone through second steps on Empathy. We have talked about being the role models for our YOKA students. When any situation arises, like rude comments, or inadequate behaviors, we take a moment to address the DRAGON PACT and make it a teachable moment.

  22. I'm planning on doing on lesson on stereotypes from the link ms turner sent us. Students will write down what comes to mind when they hear certain groups of people such as football player, cheerleader, Asians, Latinos, etc. They will then discuss in groups how these positive and negative descriptions/stereotypes could be harmful to people. We will also discuss common stereotypes each of the students face often and create signs.

  23. For our math project we are still in the planing stages and need to finalize and review our surveys.
Discussion of respect and being aware of how others feel have been touched in every period and in advisory.

  24. In my Historical Thinking Skills unit, we will be practicing "sourcing," which is determining the reliability of sources when looking at a historical event and we will look at Sandra Bland's life- what happened to her in Harris County after being pulled over for a traffic stop, arrested, and being found dead in her cell. Students will look at differenent sources to deteremine what happened to her, focusing on her life before her death. We will look into the socio-political context of her death, investigating how the murders of black and brown people has given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement, asking students to assess whether these murders can be considered hate crimes.

  25. I have used video clip showing the different types of bullying, hate crimes etc. I used pair/share and whole class discussion. Many students are eager to share, however I have one 8th grade boy class who are struggling writing about it and don't want to share because it's too personal. However, as I share my personal stories little by little students open up. Nevertheless, I still have a handful of 8th grade boys who just ca't get their thoughts together.
At this point the students are writing their final drafts to be posted on the bulletin boards.

  26. We first started working on the DRAGONS pact posters where the students would think about the environment they want to work in. I used this activity to set up the awareness unit. I gave a lecture on harassment and sexual harassment. The students had to write down notes based on definitions and examples of harassment and sexual harassment. The students finished their slogan poster to help other students on campus to be aware of signs of harassment and sexual harassment. Now, we are currently working on their narrative essay where the students talk about a time where they felt discriminated against. Successes: seeing other awareness posters along my hallway. Struggles: having the boys be serious about this topic.

  27. Our PE classes haven't really had a "normal" day with all of the assemblies, Gear-up surveys, textbooks, and issuing of lockers, so I haven't began to talk about this with ALL of my classes. Instead I have been focusing on my 6th grade classes; trying to have themselves pick up after themselves during BIC and staying off the grass to keep it alive and green. I have committed myself to try to instill a sense of YOKAmunnity into these 6th graders so they will have pride for the school and the students and staff in it.

  29. I have focused on community building activities that allow students an opportunity to teach us about who they are. As students participate we are able to survey similarities and diversity in the class. We have had discussions on the importance of acknowledging diversity and seeking similarities. Students have also found their voice in telling who they are and taking stances on issues in a recent activity as well.

  30. Our classes began with a bullying campaign, where students are introduced to the concept of bullying and hold discussions about how it feels to be bullied, how it feels to witness bullying, and what could be done. Culminating project students have to choose 1 of 3 options to create a poster. Option 1 is a words of encouragement poster, option 2 is Anti-Bullying poster, and Option 3 is people you can ask for help if you are being bullied or are a witness to bullying.
We are currently diving into discrimination and it is great to see the fire and passion in class discussions. Final project will be a google drive slide share.
