What is it you would like to SHOWCASE for parents this Thursday? What would you like parents to see and hear from your class and department?

  1. We'll discuss during our PD time today, but I'm thinking we'll lay out binders and have the kids demo some skills. I know Mr. Morrison taught them "Waiter, Raise the Roof, and Flicka da wrist" in basketball. I think the kids would enjoy demoing that.

  2. U.S history students are working on research papers on different Native American tribes that I hope will be ready and typed by Thursday! I hope parents have questions about Common Core curriculum and that my students will be able to explain or clarify their questions.

  3. I would like to show parents to competitive and comprehensive work that my students are doing in their English classroom. I would like the parents of the special education students to know that their students work is not so different from general education students.

I think it is important for parents of students with special needs to know that often their students abilities are competitive with general education students, they just require some modifications and accommodations. Often parents of students with special needs limit their abilities and make excuses for when they do not perform. I would like parents to see that their students are truly capable and how well they perform academically when given the chance.

  4. My student and I have been focused on incorporating more writing into the student projects. We would like to showcase the posters the 8th graders have been working on that demonstrates their cognition through step by step process writing. The Algebra students worked on factoring and the CCSS 8 did Tile Patterns Linear Equations. I would like parents to see how much Math class is emphasizing English Skills.

  5. Their work, their effort and their progress. It would be great if parents could actually see why some students aren't passing or "understanding" a two way mirror that shows what they act like when they aren't around. Would love for them to hear the help and support their students need. They need to see and understand it's not just a school thing to get them learning, its a a joint effort.

  6. I would like students' families to see the YOKA library space, meet the new Library Aide Mr. Mozer, and inquire about their child's library and AR record.... so that they may support students in earning 50+ AR points by June :)

  7. I would like to Showcase what we are working on currently. 6th grade Photosynthesis, 7th grade Reproductive System and 8th grade Atoms. It will be very exciting to see the students explain to their family what we are working on.

  8. I would like my parents to experience the activities the students do in class that can highlight the shifts in standards.

It would be a good idea if somehow we can communicate misconceptions around the common core and highlight the rigor versus what the media puts out there about the common core.

  9. I am planning on displaying student projects on the Declaration of Independence. I want parents to see how students were able to break down excerpts from the declaration into a fairly easy understandable language. This is something the students will need to do for common core: understand, rephrase, analyze texts.

  11. For me the showcase has become a very ineffective platform for parents to understand about the learning we do in the classroom. We are limited to what we can fit on two small tables, and often times this requires us to choose a single aspect, a single lab, project, or activity from our class. Parents are not able to see where student learning takes place, the posters and student work up in our classrooms, or the routines and procedures that relate to overall student success. The best I can hope for parents to see during our showcase is one lab, from the many labs that we did in science, during the first half of the semester.

  12. I would like to show how my 7th-grade-English students are annotating an article on restorative justice in preparation for taking the Interim Assessment. The title is "Healthy Healing or Cop Out: Can Restorative Justice Help Curb Juvenile Crime?"

  13. My students will showcase most of the work that we have been doing for the last 9 weeks. The work has been mostly done in their notebooks. They will show their weekly journals, vocabulary for several chapters we have been working on, quizzes for those vocabulary words, homework, reading and answering questions assignments and charts such as tree maps, circle maps and see-mean-question charts.

  14. I would like to show some of the projects my students worked on. My students created a molecule poster to show the atomic composition of simple molecules. And my students also did research on Alcohol, Tobacco and other drugs, and they have been working on creating a brochure to show the information they found.

  15. I would like the parents to see our practice assessments that our department created to prepare for the upcoming Smarter Balance assessment, as well as their journals. Also I would like the parents to see and hear how students understand the common cores standards that their respective lessons are based on.

  16. I would like to display the student's skills in annotating and analyzing. Social Studies involves a lot of critical analysis and something that we cover in our class almost everyday. I have worked a lot in developing their analytical skills using the Four Worlds Framework and Annotating Text. I want to show the parents their student's ability to break down and interpret historical images and documents. These are really valuable skills that their students will continue to use and develop as they go on through high school and college.

  17. I plan to display some group work (posters) that students recently created and presented in class, which demonstrates their cumulative understanding of the unit on "heat transfer". There will also be a portion of an associated lab activity that students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the key concepts observed within it. Certain parts of activities and demonstrations will also be displayed to give parents a visual reference of what the students have been involved with during their in class inquiry and observations. The overall goal for my class as well as the department is to provide a better understanding for parents as to what is entailed within the new NGSS standards, and how they are now being implemented in our collective classes.

  18. I would like to give parents an insight into what work in our math classroom entails. I will ask Some students to show their interactive NB's and i would like to post some work with the big ideas we have covered with our CPM curriculum.

I look forward to hearing our students describe to their parents/guardians what they've learned so far.

  19. The parents should be able to experience the daily warm-up, stretches and exercises that their sons and daughters go through during PE. Hopefully, the students will partner up wth their parents, and "challenge" them in a friendly competition, where the goal is to gain a better understanding on the importance of lifelong physical activity.

  20. Since we have officially transferred over to Common Core curriculum, I am in favor of showcasing the higher level thinking that we are having our students perform. I love having the students answer the "why" along with the "how" of their curriculum.

  21. Students will show the knowledge they have gained from a 6th-grade unit on Pompeii which we are still working on and hopefully will be finalizing by the end of this week and beginning of next week.; students know how to annotate and use critical thinking skills with complete notetaking. Students will showcase their notebooks and manila folders, the setup and how it is used for present and future reference. Students will be able to discuss how common core works in an English class. Students also know why history in any aspect is important to know in order to get better and improve in any area. Students color code their writing and notes for better and deeper understanding of what they are learning. Students will also show how to diagram grammar such as subject-verb agreement with pronoun

  22. I would like to showcase the type of work students are doing through the CPM book that is Common Core aligned, the group work they do, and how students organize their work in their notebooks. Due to Common Core students are doing more writing in Math as they are required to explain their thinking process, analyze work, and/or explain patterns that they see in math.

  23. Students have written a non-fiction piece about themselves and their families, and I will also post a newspaper article on the 50th anniversary of the United Farm Workers which the students annotated.

  24. As my students begin to undergo mental and physiological changes as they develop, it is very important for them to know why and how those changes occur. On Thursday, my students will present an experiment showcasing the differences between physical and chemical changes. I would like to see my students explaining to their parents how these changes are different and why these types of changes are important to their everyday lives.

  26. I would like parents to see that our students are not only learning the mathematical procedures and equations but they are also learning to explain their results. Our sixth graders are focusing on using key words as they describe the pattern, graph, plot, and answers.

  27. This Thursday I would like to showcase my student's learning. By allowing my students to come and earn points to raise their grades. They will have the opportunity to demonstrate what they learned in one lab. I will also like to show the future lesson my USC fellow has developed for their children.
