What is your CCSS message to parents?

  1. The kids need to be able to express their thinking in writing. Exams will now be done online, students should be computer literate. Reading comprehension is a must across all subject areas. My message is emphasize Reading, Writing, and Technology.

    1. Even our definition of literacy needs to change! You are right when you say our students need to be computer literate. That is part of literacy in the 21st century

  2. Student's will demonstrate how they are transitioning into the CCSS and NGSS.

  3. I want them to know that just as their student is learning, we are woking hard in learning how to better prepare them for this new phase in education. We are doing our best to understand, and better prepare our students for the future.

  4. The 21st century musician is expected to be able to know the historical and cultural points of music. Students are not only going to learn how to play an instrument and make music but they will also become scholars in music history, connecting what they are learning in music with today's society.

    1. Sophistication is what I thought of when I read your post. You are truly making more sophisticated musicians. That truly is common core...and going deeper.

  5. Our message is that we will be emphasizing problem solving and analytic skills in cross-curricular projects. The goal is to make learning real and applicable to the students.

  6. I want parents to leave CCSS night feeling like they know what to expect for the child next year. The shift is a bit difficult for the students and parents will might feel even more lost. Thus, if we can expose parents to the new CCSS and show sample work they can go home and have a better idea of what they too can start doing to help out their child be successful with the new common core standards.

thoughts: what resources/ideas can we give parents so that they can help their child make the transition to CCSS?

  7. I would tell parents that CCSS is shift that is more applicable to real life and focuses on necessary skills that students need to be successful. In math, you will see a shift from a focus on procedural math to conceptual tasks that require students to analyze, research, and make conclusions. Students will learn by understanding concepts on a deeper level, why certain steps are required rather than just doing the math. Lastly, there will be a greater focus on academic language because students will be expected to explain/write their reasoning, which will have a greater impact on their learning.

  8. I will tell parents that the teacher directed textbook heavy test taking culture is over, and that the CC will demand that their students read difficult documents and must make meaning of them using processes and strategies taught across the classes. Much more reading of primary docs and writing will be and is expected.

    1. If you could truly get your students to see the value in a primary document and extracting the evidence from it I think you would have taken a tremendous first step.

  9. It's all about becoming a critical writer, listener, and speaker. This why it is very important that your child reads every day during at least 45 minutes. The more they read the better thinkers and writers they become. It is all about practice.

    Padres,
Practica, practica, practica.

  10. We are moving away from "one size fits all" testing towards assessing the students' true skills and ability. Performance based tasks along with writing and problem solving allow students with different abilities to demonstrate varied skills, rather than a few that get prioritized. It also allows students who understand in different ways to interpret the tasks so that all students can access the tests. The new standards help students develop these skills, which are actually relevant in today's world. Classes will be more based around developing these skills, enhancing the learning environment for all students.

  11. I want our parents to know that we are in transition since the testing has changed. We as educators and administrators will show interested parents what CCSS is all about.

  12. My common core message for parents:
CCSS will empower students in and with mathematics.
I want them to see how students are creating their own thinking while critiquing each other's thinking. The goal is have as much student participation as possible to attain any repeating structure/pattern and formalize their thinking.

  13. Piggy backing on Aida's response: Student's will demonstrate how they are transitioning into the CCSS and NGSS, with more a focus on depth of knowledge than breadth, and emphasis on explaining one's reasoning.

  14. Students have been reading current event articles, annotating the articles, creating questions for each other, writing, studying specific topics in science and history, analyzing text in depth, revisiting grammar, and poetry slam on the way.

  15. Furthermore, students have been practicing their listening, speaking skills as well through various projects.

  16. We will be demonstrating how we are transitioning from CST format (bubble in answers) to higher level thinking assessment (open ended questions) to better prepare students for 21 century skills.

    1. I think what you said about "higher level thinking assessment" is a pretty high expectation that means some radical change in some of our classroom practices. To move our students towards more applicable 21st century skills is a daunting but worthy leap.

  17. The emphasis of analytical thinking skills applied to primary and secondary documents.
