Any CCSS New Year's Resolutions? What are your professional development priorities for assisting with the Instructional Shifts?

  1. I feel we need a lot more hands-on practice experiencing close reading, text dependent questions, and using technology. I think the more we practice ourselves, the more comfortable and competent we will feel about making the shifts with our students.

  2. My CCSS New Year's Resolution is to create Peer Assessments for each P.E. Unit so the kids are doing some writing for each sport/activity.

  3. I would like to attend some workshops on this and observe teachers who are using CCSS.

  4. My goal for the second semester is to incorporate more concept tasks in the Algebra and Geometry curriculum. I would like the students to get more practice in and see how much for demanding concept tasks will be than formula driven assessments. I would also like to focus 2nd semester on Math Practice #3, constructing viable arguments.

  5. To improve on the type of questions that I ask in class. Focus more on questions that require more thinking and require more student explanation. Priorities for Professional Development would definitely include more time to plan and find curriculum that goes along with the new CCSS. Department time to discuss strategies have worked in the past when covering certain topics.

  6. My CCSS New Year's Resolution is to develop a school wide focus on having students answer the question being asked. After grading the periodic assessments with my department, I realized students have very good writing skills but don't really write on the prompt they are being asked. Most of the essays were summaries of the text they read but the essays did not answer the prompt asked (author's point of view, perspective, etc...)

  7. I would like to implement reading strategies in science that support CCSS in ELA. I would also like to attend workshops on the Next Generation Science Standards. This is a huge gray area for science teacher, with many implications for change in the scope and sequence of the middle school curriculum. I am excited to learn about instructional strategies that support NGSS.

  9. My resolution for the new semester is to align my rubric to reflect the CCSS writing standards. Typically I have said things like "clear and organized," but the CCSS give me specific guidelines for my technical class, and I plan to focus on those when assessing the students.

  15. My CCSS New Year’s Resolution is to incorporate activities that are aligned to Common Core State Standards and continue to have students work on academic language within math through writing activities. My development priorities for assisting with the instructional shifts are to assist workshops or work with colleagues to start developing a curriculum for the semester that is aligned to Common Core State Standards.
